It's TRUE, everybody!
The French really, really like it when we are formal, and cordial. While dispensing my own, harried manner, I have been corrected by a stranger, a French stranger, before.
Me (loosely translated): "May I have a glass of ___?"
The stranger's response: "Good evening."
Me (totally embarrassed): "Good evening, ma'am. May I have a glass of…?"
So, it seems that The French are sensitive in this way… And why shouldn't they be? I love that, at least in some cafés, they are "nipping this in the bud."
